The decision of axing Luis Suárez from FC Barcelona was a very polemical and controversial one. It was taken by ex-president Josep María Bartomeu, supported by head coach Ronald Koeman, and generated a complete chaos at the Catalan side. Lionel Messi lost his great friend and companion on the field after many years.
Suárez decided to carry on and, even though he first tried to move to Juventus, he finally ended at Atlético de Madrid. Under Diego Simeone’s mandate, he has recovered his best form and is helping the team to be at the top of LaLiga after 17 matches played with him as the top-scorer.
Suárez has scored nine goals and, aside Iago Aspas and Gerard Moreno, is the one who did the most. The numbers mock Barcelona attackers themselves: between Martin Braithwaite, Antoine Griezmann and Ousmane Dembélé they have only scored eight goals, one less than Suárez alone.
Looking at this panorama it is incredible to think that Barça had him and axed him for free on September. The attacker was formed in Nacional and then passed through FC Groningen, Ajax, Liverpool, Barcelona and Atleti. After 16 matches at his new club, he has scored nine goals and gave a pair of assists.
