Lionel Messi's departure from Barcelona is having both short term and long term effects on the club, both in terms of sporting advantage he brings on the pitch and the influence he has on the club's income, both are coming real quicker than expected.
According to Messi's contract leak last season, he is paid a little above 30% of what he earns for the club and with his departure the club's revenue will plunge further as he is the reason Barcelona get paid so much by sponsors when deals are to be made.
The shirt sponsorship deal with Rakuten which is in front of the club's jersey will expire at the end of the season and the brand is unwilling to renew the €100m per season deal due to Lionel Messi's departure. The Indian educational company willing to sponsor the club is holding out for €55m per season.
Gerard Pique was reported to have told president Joan Laporta that Messi's departure won't have much negative effects, he clearly was looking at how much it costs to have him, he wasn't looking at how much the club will lose.
