Lionel Messi's shock move to Paris Saint-Germain after 21 years at FC Barcelona saw him sign a two years contract in Paris worth $41m per season , retaining the top spot as soccer's highest paid player despite taking a massive pay cut from what he earned at Barcelona.

Messi earned $71m base salary at Barcelona and with bonuses and other fees which made it rise to about $131m per season. He took a massive pay cut of about 50% to remain at Barcelona but the deal could not be registered and Messi moved on with Paris as his final destination.

Major League Soccer was one of Messi's eye leagues with David Beckham's franchise Inter Miami, the club where he could have played for. He fuelled the rumour by buying two different properties in Miami, one of which has been put up for sale.

Golden State Warriors Steph Curry has the biggest per season contract in the NBA, he earns $53m per season with his five years contract signed this year which expires in 2026. Messi's net worth of $400m is more than Curry's $160m despite earning more salary.
