In January 2014, after the resignation of Sandro Rosell, Josep Maria Bartomeu become president of Barcelona and soon after won the elections in 2015. Since he assumed as maximum authority of the club the FC Barcelona has increased their debts to 357 million euros.

This transfer market is a perfect summary of what has happened in almost all the transfer windows from Barcelona since Bartomeu is the club's president. This season he has got rid of 70 million euros in contracts with the exits of Rafinha, Rakitic, Arturo Vidal and Luis Suárez but with the money received from these exits does not reach 2 million euros .

In these six seasons –according to Transfermarkt- 1,079.85 million euros has been spent and only 722.75 million were raised, resulting in a loss of 357.1 million. That it to say, 59.5 million per season. Neymar's sale for 222 million euros is a clear example. That money was later spent on Coutinho -145 million, then loaned to Bayern Munich - and  Dembélé -130 million, but an extremely poor level shown until today-.

Bartomeu signed Arda Turan and Aleix Vidal for 34 and 18 million euros in 2015. The Turk went free to Galatasaray and the Spanish returned to Sevilla FC for 9 million euros just a couple of seasons later. A year later, Bartomeu invested 122 million euros in Cillesen, Digne, Umtiti, Denis Suárez, André Gomes and Alcácer. None of that players remain on the club.

Now, just a month after Lionel Messi's request to leave the club, Barcelona failed in signing Eric Garcia from which Manchester City and Memphis Depay, from which Lyon. The price tags weren't at all impossible to match, but red numbers are complicating Barcelona's existence and pulling the Spanish gigant away from the top European teams.
