Kylian Mbappé has made the first step toward his move to Real Madrid to be confirmed as he announced on social media that he will leave PSG at the end of the season. With the player becoming a free agent this summer, Mbappé could join any team for free, but the club that is in pole position to sign him is Real Madrid. According to Fabrizio Romano, Real Madrid was always Mbappé's preferred choice to be his next club, but a Saudi Arabian club offered the French star over $200 million per season salary, which is more than Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi. Mbappé said no to that offer as he always wanted to play at Real Madrid after his career at PSG.

Mbappé caused interest from Premier League clubs as well, but there were never concrete or advanced talks with any English team. The reason behind these rejections, including the $200 million salary in Saudi Arabia, is the promise he kept from Real Madrid president Florentino Perez. Mbappé wanted to play for Los Blancos for a long time and did not want to disappoint Perez again after he did in 2022 when he was close to joining as well.

A man whom Mbappé did disappoint was the PSG chairman Nasser Al-Khelaïfi. Mbappé's video about his announcement to leave PSG shocked many football fans, including PSG and Al-Khelaïfi. L'Équipe reports that the PSG chairman discovered the Mbappé departure video at the same time as we did. The video was posted all over the French star's social media pages on Friday, and now he will play his final home game for PSG today against Toulouse in Ligue 1.

Mbappé's offer compared to Messi and Ronaldo's salaries

Mbappé's $215 million per season offer at Saudi Arabia was worth way more than Lionel Messi's contract at Inter Miami and Cristiano Ronaldo at Al Nassr. Messi repeatedly earns a base salary of $12 million in the US but with guaranteed compensation of $20.4 million. Ronaldo reportedly earns a salary worth $213.2 million per year, which is close to Mbappé's offer, but the French star would've earned slightly more.
