Major League Soccer was created on December 17, 1993, in fulfillment of Alan Rothenberg and the United States Soccer Federation’s promise to FIFA to establish a “top level" professional soccer league in exchange for the awarding of the 1994 World Cup to the United States.
Major League Soccer's goal was to become one of the major soccer leagues in the world and one of the major sports leagues in the United States. The league began its first season in 1996 with ten teams and enjoyed promising attendance figures.

Major League Soccer began in 1996 with just ten teams, often referred to as the league’s original teams. The league has, however, witnessed a series of expansions over the years.
Although at some point in 2001, the idea of an expansion team was put on hold. But the need to accelerate the growth of soccer and make the MLS a standout league in the world opened a new window for more expansion teams. It was established in 1993.
Established in 1994, San Jose Earthquakes, New York Red Bulls (as MetroStars), LA Galaxy, DC United, New England Revolution and Columbus Crew are the six oldest teams in the Major League Soccer.
