Mexico National Team wasted their opportunity not only of ensuring their ticket to the 2022 FIFA World Cup and getting on the mix to finish as CONCACAF leaders, but also to end the recent hegemony that USMNT has established over El Tri.

Gerardo Martino singled out this player as Mexico's best player against the USMNT

With the scoreless draw in Estadio Azteca, the Stars and Stripes remained undefeated against the Aztec squad for four straight games, the first time in history that it happens, and given that neither Mexicans nor Americans will play the Qualifiers for the next World Cup, it will be a long time until El Tri can break that streak.

But what makes it more unbelievable is the fact that Gerardo “Tata” Martino, even with one of the best lineups he’s started since he arrived, couldn’t open the scoresheet against an American squad that didn’t have some of their best players due to injury, like Weston McKennie, Sergiño Dest and Brenden Aaronson.

That’s why, when asked about the future coach of El Tri, Yon de Luisa, Mexican Football Federation chairman, said that he already took a decision regarding the continuity of Gerardo Martino as El Tri’s coach for Qatar.

What did De Luisa decide?

Given the results that the other CONCACAF teams had on Thursday, El Tri only needs a victory in the last two matches to ensure their presence in Qatar 2022, as Panama couldn’t beat Honduras and Costa Rica beat Canada, the only team that remained unbeaten.

That’s why Yon de Luisa decided to keep Gerardo Martino as El Tri’s coach at least for the next two games, but with the idea of having him for the rest of the cycle, unless the Aztec squad doesn’t manage to classify to the World Cup.

What’s in store for Mexico National Team?

Mexico National Team will visit Honduras on Sunday March 27, a game that turned to be more important than expected, but still an easy win, at least on paper, given that Honduras hasn’t win a single game in the Qualifiers.

El Tri will close the FIFA match window and the CONCACAF Qualifiers on Wednesday night in Estadio Azteca, when they receive El Salvador, team that was eliminated on Thursday after the 1-1 draw they had on their visit to Jamaica.
