The Mexican national team has less than six months to prepare for their participation in the 2022 FIFA World Cup, something that they already started doing on Saturday night, when they faced Nigeria in Arlington, Texas on a game that El Tri won 2-1.

Although the team showed an improvement from the level that they had during the CONCACAF Qualifiers, the fact that they had to play with an alternative lineup doesn’t help Gerardo “Tata” Martino much, unless to discard players that won’t make it to Qatar 2022 with El Tri.

Martino knows that there’s a lot to be done if he wants the Aztec squad to have a good participation in the World Cup, as it won’t be easy making it into the knockout stage as they will face Poland and Argentina in the first two games of the group stage.

Will he stay in El Tri after the World Cup?

Reports suggest that Yon de Luisa and FMF are waiting until after the World Cup ends to decide the future of Martino in El Tri, as his contract expires in December, but it will be the results the ones that decide if he stay for another World Cup cycle or not.

In case he doesn’t stay in El Tri, during a press conference prior the game against the Super Eagles, Martino revealed that he’d like to coach CF Pachuca in Liga MX, as he said that Los Tuzos are a team that plays consistently throughout every game on a league where usually teams get serious after half of the season has already passed.

Martino knows that even if the format of Liga MX is exciting for soccer fans and is attractive for sponsors and TV broadcasting, the level of Mexican soccer could improve if every team played at the highest level since week one, like Pachuca.
