Carlos Vela is one of the best players that Mexico currently has, even if he hasn’t been considered to play for the Mexican national team since 2018, when El Tri was eliminated by Brazil in the round of 16 of Russia 2018.

One of Gerardo Martino’s favorite players will step down from Mexico National Team prior Qatar 2022

Gerardo “Tata” Martino hasn’t considered calling him since his arrival, even if in 2019 he was named the 2019 Landon Donovan MLS MVP after breaking the record of Josef Martínez of goals scored in a single season, when he scored 34 goals in one season.

In the current season, Vela has started with the same strength as two seasons ago, as he’s scored four goals and has assisted one time in five games, including a hat-trick in the opening game of the season against Colorado Rapids.

It’s undeniable that his goaling-streak could have been of use for the Mexican national team, who have been lacking a solid striker as they haven’t been able to score more than two goals since the 3-0 victory over Honduras in October.

Vela doesn’t close the doors to El Tri

Prior the January FIFA match window, Carlos Vela announced during an interview for ESPN that he was retiring from Mexico National Team, as he believed that his time had already passed, and it was the opportunity or the younger generations to achieve what he couldn’t do.

But now that he learned that El Tri is going to face Argentina and Messi in the World Cup, he has opened the door again for an eventual return to the Aztec squad, as according to reports from El Universal Deportes, he’s willing to return as long as Martino fulfills two requests.

The first one is to soften the discipline measures that Martino has imposed in El Tri’s camp, as he has prohibited the players from seeing their families, as they ae not allowed in the Hotel where the players are staying, something that Vela can’t stand, as he’s really close to his family.

He’s also asking to leave a player out of the roster

Vela is also asking to leave Andrés Guardado out of the final roster, as “El Principito” was one of the players with whom he had discussions in Russia 2018 about the way the awarded prizes were given to the players. Guardado could miss the World cup if he doesn’t fully recover.
