Mexico National Team managed to save a point after the scoreless draw against USMNT for the first match of the last CONCACAF Qualifiers match window, on a game that El Tri couldn’t get close to Zack Steffen’s goal.

Yon de Luisa already decided who’s the coach that will take Mexico National Team to Qatar 2022

The Aztec squad didn’t have many options in the offense, as Raúl Jiménez only had one clear play in the box, as most of the game he had to start the plays from the third quarter of the pitch or take the ball towards the corners to open spaces.

And even if El Tri had the possession of the ball, the most dangerous plays of the game were for the Stars and Stripes, especially a ball that Christian Pulisic receive in the goal box but wasn’t able to aim and Guillermo Ochoa saved it with his body.

USMNT had three clear opportunities of opening the score sheet, but that doesn’t erase the fact that, for the first time since Gerardo “Tata” Martino arrived in El Tri, he lined up the two best defenders that the Aztec squad has.

Who is the silent hero of El Tri?

After making him travel all the way from Italy just to bench him, Martino understood that Johan Vásquez is the best center back that Mexico National Team has, as he’s been an essential player for Genoa in their quest for avoiding relegation.

Johan Vásquez played his fifth match wearing El Tri colors and showed why he should be considered to start every game, especially if he’s going to share the backfield with César Montes, as the two defenders have built a good chemistry since playing in Monterrey and then in El Tri’s U-23 squad.

Will there be more changes in the upcoming call-ups?

Gerardo Martino surprised everyone with the roster he decided to call for the FIFA match window, as he decided to call players like Israel Reyes or Santiago Giménez instead of some of the most constant players on his roster, like Rogelio Funes Mori or Luis “Chaka” Rodríguez.

The Argentine coach said that the generational change will arrive with time, but the good work that Jaime Lozano did with the U-23 squad is finally paying off, and that he doesn’t close the door to keep strengthening the squad with younger players.
