Gerardo Martino won’t be in Qatar 2022 even if he classified Mexico National Team; this coach is his replacement

For now, the Aztec squad is standing third in CONCACAF, with 25 points after 11 games, same that USMNT, although the Stars and Stripes have a better goal difference. Standing four is Costa Rica, who will have to win against USA and hope that Mexico loses against the Salvadorians if they want toa void the playoffs.

Even if Gerardo “Tata” Martino has found a way of making El Tri one of the best defenses of CONCACAF -they haven’t received a goal in over 4 games-, the problems that the Aztec squad are having on the offensive side have been worrying everyone for a while.

That’s why FMF and Liga MX owners are considering parting ways with him once the CONCACAF Qualifiers are over and replacing him with Miguel Herrera, who already had a similar situation prior the 2014 World Cup.

Herrera’s request to arrive in El Tri

For now, Miguel Herrera is comfortable with Tigres, where he finally was able to establish the offensive system that he likes his teams to play, but he also knows that he won’t close the doors to returning to El Tri, although he has some requests in order to accept replacing Martino.

The first request will be increasing his salary, as he currently is earning $3 million per year, and given he has one of the best teams in Liga MX, he would need a $2 million increase to leave Los Felinos amidst the season.

To add to the economical side of his requests, he’d also ask to earn at least $50,000 per add recorded, as he’d be one of the most renown faces in El Tri, like in 2014, and have all the facilities to be part of as much TV spots as he wishes.

On the sporting side of his return, he would request to have the full 2026 cycle to establish his system and be able to call any player he wants, avoiding some of the imposed players in the current roster, as he knows that taking the job just for the remainder of the year is not worth it for him.

TV Azteca is also part of his requests

The last request that “El Piojo” Herrera has made in order to accept returning to El Tri’s bench is that both Luis García and Christian Martinoli -who was involved in the fight that got Herrera sacked the first time- apologize to him and restrain from criticizing his work on national television.
