And with the rosters already revealed, the absences of regular players in previous calls are some of the ones that stand out the most, as they have jeopardized their arrival to the 2022 FIFA World Cup given the decisions that they took on the past winter transfer window, when they decided to leave their former clubs in order to look for a better paycheck.

That’s the case of three former Cruz Azul players who decided to leave La Máquina prior the start of Clausura 2022, as they haven’t been able to consolidate in their new teams and that has left them out of the race to be part of their national teams.

So far, things have worked for Cruz Azul without these players, as they’re still on the mix for the top places in Liga MX and are going to play in the semifinals of the CONCACAF Champions League on April, but for their former players, If things don’t change for good in the upcoming months, they might not be going to make it to Qatar 2022.

Who are the players that won’t play in the FIFA match window?

The first of the players on the list is Jonathan “Cabecita” Rodríguez, who informed Cruz Azul of his desire to leave the club after the first round of Clausura was already played. He joined Saudi Arabian side Al-Nassr Riad for two years with a salary of $2 million per season. His decision of leaving Liga MX also placed him far from the radar of Diego Alonso, who took over the job in Uruguay National Team with the challenge of classify the Charrúas to the World Cup.

The next in line is Roberto “Piojo” Alvarado, who left La Máquina as part of a trade with Chivas for Uriel Antuna and Alejandro Mayorga, as the 23-year-old right-winger felt like his time in Cruz Azul had come and was looking for a fresh start.

The last former Cruz Azul player that won’t have activity in the FIFA match window is Orbelín Pineda, who decided to leave Cruz Azul after his contract expired and moved to Europe, to play in La Liga side Celta de Vigo, although he has played 30 minutes in just two games, given that Eduardo “Chacho” Coudet has stated that he didn’t ask for him and he doesn’t have a place on his roster.

Three Cruz Azul players made the cut in Mexico National Team

Not everything is bad news for La Máquina players, as Gerardo “Tata” Martino considered three players that have had outstanding performances in Clausura 2022, which is why Carlos “Charly” Rodríguez, Uriel Antuna and Santiago Giménez will wear El Tri’s colors against USMNT, Honduras and El Salvador.
