The biggest absentees that Gerardo Martino didn’t want to have in Mexico National Team

Not even the fact that the Argentine coach finally understood that Rogelio Funes Mori didn’t have the level to be part of the Aztec squad opened the door to the Mexican striker that currently has the best active scoring streak.

Although Funes Mori won’t be part of the last three matches that El Tri will face in the upcoming CONCACAF Qualifiers match window due to an injury that has prevented him from playing the last couple of weeks, Martino was already considering not calling him before that.

The absence of the Monterrey forward is a decision that benefits the Aztec squad, but even if “Chicharito” was the next striker in line to replace him, Martino decided to keep him out of El Tri unless Hernández fulfilled the request that he did to him.

What did Martino asked “Chicharito” to do?

Reports suggest that Gerardo Martino was in close contact with “Chicharito” Hernández in the weeks prior to the announcement of El Tri’s roster, as he was willing to offer him the spot that Funes Mori left vacant if he was willing to publicly apologize.

Javier Hernández hasn’t closed the door to an eventual return to Mexico National Team -unlike Carlos Vela, who preferred to retire from El Tri instead of establishing communication with Martino and FMF-, but it seems he’s not disposed to satisfy Martino’s demands to get the veto revoked.

It’s worth remembering that Martino vetoed Javier Hernández from the Aztec squad in 2019 after he was involved in a scandal on the last call that he was part of, as he was caught sneaking women to the hotel where the players were staying.

Javier Hernández’s numbers since his veto

“Chicharito” arrived in LA Galaxy in the 2019-20 season after one of the most chaotic seasons he had in his career, as he played with three teams that year. During his first season in MLS, Hernández had a tough time adapting, as he played in only 12 games and scored two goals.

But for the 2021 MLS Season, he was the top scorer of the Galaxy, as he scored 17 goals -being the only player with double digits on the team- and assisted three times. For the current season, the Galaxy has played three games so far, where “Chicharito” has scored 2 goals.
