Even if Gerardo “Tata” Martino knows that the Mexican national team is in need of a striker that can score consistently, he has blacklisted two of the most dependable strikers that Mexico currently has: Carlos Vela and Javier “Chicharito” Hernández.

Each player has scored five goals in the 2022 MLS Season, while El Tri strikers that were called up to the CONCACAF Qualifiers only got to score six goals amongst the three of them, with Raúl Jiménez being the top scorer, with just three goals.

Martino knows that one of the things that the Aztec squad needs to improve in the six and a half months prior to the 2022 FIFA World Cup is the number of goals that El Tri scores each game, which is why he’s already trying out new players, like Eduardo “Mudo” Aguirre and Santiago Giménez.

But “Chaquito” Giménez couldn’t score on the friendly game that he was the starter and Aguirre watched all the game from the bench, something that could be interpreted as a lack of trust from Martino’s side.

“Chicharito” could return in the summer

That lack of trust, added to the recent comments that the Argentine coach made about the good performance that Javier Hernández is having in MLS with LA Galaxy, have opened the door for his eventual return for the friendly game that El Tri will play over the summer.

But for “Chicharito” to wear El Tri colors again, he hasn’t done it since 2019, Martino has established two conditions that he has to fulfill before receiving a new call up, even if Martino knows that his presence in El Tri will instantly improve the possibilities of scoring.

The first condition, according to sports journalist Enrique Bermúdez, who said that the Mexican striker already spoke with Gerardo Martino, is to publicly apologize to his teammates and everyone involved with El Tri for the mistakes that he committed the last time he was part of the roster.

What’s the second condition?

Martino is aware that during the 2018 World Cup, one of the biggest problems that happened and that almost broke the locker room was related to the awards and bonuses that FMF gave to the players, which is why “Chicharito” will have to turn down the awards for Qatar 2022 if he makes it into the final roster.
