Carlos “Gullit” Peña had his best performances when he was a player for Club León, team he joined back in 2011 when Los Panzas Verdes were still playing in Liga de Expansión, Mexico’s second division. He was part of the team that get the promotion to Liga MX and then became back-to-back champion in Liga MX.

He was also called to Mexico National Team for CONCACAF Qualifiers to the 2014 FIFA World Cup, and he even was linked to French side PSG, although his transfer never happened. But Peña started to lose his shape after the friendly match that El Tri played against Ecuador National Team.

That was the game when Luis Montes, his partner both with El Tri and León, suffered an injury that prevented him from going to the Brazil’s World Cup. Peña never felt comfortable in the pitch without Montes, and after getting trade to Chivas, he started having problems with alcohol.

What happened to Carlos Peña?

The last team he played for was Antigua GFC, from Guatemala, but he was cut off from the roster and now, as a free agent, he’s looking to return to Liga MX, where two teams are interested in acquiring the 32-year-old offensive midfielder.
