Gerardo Martino has decided if he’ll call Marcelo Flores to Mexico National Team

The Aztec squad will start their journey in Qatar 2022 on November 20, when they face Poland, the game that will define which of the two teams advances to the knockout stage along Argentina, who will be facing El Tri on November 26.

Gerardo “Tata” Martino knows of the importance of the first two games that El Tri will have in Qatar, but especially the one against Argentina, where he wants to make a statement and prove that Mexico is able to go face to face with any team.

That’s why El Tri will face three friendly games against CONMEBOL teams -Uruguay, Ecuador and Paraguay-, as Martino knows that in order to compete against La Albiceleste, they first have to get used to the way South American soccer is played.

He hasn’t decided the full roster yet

But one of the things that Martino must solve before arriving in Qatar, is the roster that he will take, as according to reports from sports journalist David Medrano, he still has six spots open on the 26-men roster that FIFA allowed for the World Cup.

The six remainder players will come out of the preliminary list of 36 players that Martino will call for the friendly games of May, June and August, and according to the same reports, Marcelo Flores will be part of those 36.

The new call-up to the senior Mexican squad is something that increases his chances of making it into the final roster, and even if Martino hasn’t agreed with some declarations that Flores recently made, he knows that a talent like his is needed in El Tri, not only for Qatar, but for the World Cups that will come after.

What does he need to make it into the final roster?

One of the things that Martino has asked to the players is to have regularity in the months prior to the World Cup, which is why Flores will have to debut in Premier League first, and then earn Mikel Arteta’s trust to give him playing time regularly, something that seems possible given that he already trains with the first team.
