The Mexican national team already started their preparation for the 2022 FIFA World Cup with a friendly game against Guatemala at the end of April and will continue their tour through the United States at the end of May and the beginning of June.

The Aztec squad will face Nigeria, Uruguay and Ecuador from May 28 to June 5 and then will start their participation in the CONCACAF Nations League with two games, the first one will be played in Mexican soil against Surinam and for the second one, El Tri will visit Jamaica.

Gerardo “Tata” Martino has said in recent press conferences that the roster that he will call up for the upcoming games will be mostly made up of players U-23, as he wants to give rest to the usual players that he calls up.

According to reports from sports journalist David Medrano, Martino is only looking to fill six spots on the final roster that he will call to Qatar, players that will come out from the roster that faces the upcoming five games of El Tri.

Will Marcelo Flores be part of the call up?

After Marcelo Flores’s declarations during the training camp for the game against Guatemala, where he said that he wants to play in the World Cup, either with Mexico or Canada, people feared that Martino was going to blacklist him, as he’s done in the past with other players.

But the Argentine coach also knows that he needs to start thinking about the 2026 World Cup and the generational change that El Tri will go through once Qatar 2022 is over, given that several players will retire from El Tri in December.

That’s why he agreed to call up Marcelo Flores for the games of the CONCACAF Nations League, as he’s still unsure of the six players that will be included in the final roster, giving Flores the chance of proving why he should be considered among them.

Will he play in Qatar?

It’s yet to be seen what Martino will decide regarding Flores’s presence for Qatar but is a good sign that he considered him for the summer games. And if Flores manages to debut and establish as a regular player in Arsenal next season, his chance will increase exponentially.
