On Monday morning, Marcelo Flores posted an open letter announcing that he is ready to assume one of the biggest commitments of his life, as he finally revealed that he wants to wear the Mexican national team for the rest of his professional career.

On his announcement, he first thanked his mother and Canada for being the ones that helped him discover his love for soccer, saying that even if he’s 18, he had to be the one that revealed with who he wanted to play.

Although Canada has been pursuing his addition to their national team for a while, with his letter, he thanked them for the interest but closed the door for his arrival, as well as to England, who he also thanked for giving him the chance of becoming a soccer player.

His decision of choosing a national team arrives a few days before Gerardo “Tata” Martino reveals the preliminary list of the players that will be considered for the final roster that will represent Mexico in the 2022 FIFA World Cup and could open the door for more dual-nationality players follow his steps.

 

Who are the other players that want to play for El Tri?

Minutes after Flores posted his letters, players from the Mexican academy teams congratulated him for the decision and welcomed him to El Tri once again, as they know that having a player like him in El Tri increases Mexico’s chances of transcending in a World Cup in the future.

Benjamín Galdamés, Luca Martínez Dupuy, and Diego Abreu, all of whom have played along Marcelo Flores in the U-20 squad and that share the fact that hold two or more nationalities were among the players that celebrated his decision.

Although all of them already debuted with their respective teams in a top-tier league, Gerardo Martino hasn’t considered them to be part of the Mexican national team, even if they have showed more talent than some of the players in the current roster.

 

Mexico could beat USMNT for another Dual Nat

According to reports from Embajadores Aztecas, another player that has decided to represent Mexico after having formed in the US Soccer academy teams is Richard Ledezma, who currently plays for Eredivisie side PSV Eindhoven.
