It’s no lie to say that Marcelo Flores is one of the most promising players the Mexican national team currently has, as in the past year his career has skyrocketed to a point of even having debuted with El Tri’s senior squad.

He decided to step down from Mexico National Team when they needed him the most

So far, he’s made the jump from the Arsenal’s U-18 squad to the U-23 and is just one step away from debuting with the senior team in Premier League, as Mikel Arteta usually considers him to train with them, as he knows of his capabilities.

For now, he keeps preparing day by day and becoming an essential piece in Kevin Batsy’s starting XI, as most of the time Flores is involved in the score sheet one way or another. But his dreams don’t stop there, as he wants to finally debut in an official match with El Tri.

During an interview with Goal, the 18-year-old striker said that he has two main objectives to achieve before the end of the year. The first one is debuting in Premier League before turning 19, and the second one is being part of El Tri’s squad that plays in Qatar 2022.

Will Martino consider him?

Gerardo “Tata” Martino knows of his talent, as he already called him to a friendly match against Chile in December, where the Mexican forward played for the last 10 minutes of the game, but he has yet to play in an official match.

Although Flores had his first cap, it’s unsure if the Argentine coach will consider him to arrive to Qatar, as he’s been reluctant to call many young prospects -something he just started doing for this match window-, given that he values experience over youth.

At least for the moment, Flores is focused on performing the best he can with the U-20 squad during their tour in Uruguay, but if his first goal of 2022 becomes a reality, Martino won’t have any other choice than include him on the roster for Qatar.

Canada, with possibilities of calling him

As long as Martino doesn’t give him minutes in an official match, Flores still has the option of playing either for Canada or England. The Canadian national team doesn’t give up on their quest of convincing him to play for the Maple Leaf, although Flores has said that, at least for now, he’s decided to wear El Tri colors.
