He decided to step down from Mexico National Team when they needed him the most

El Tri will face Honduras on Sunday night.

Mexico National Team haven’t ensured their presence in the 2022 FIFA World Cup, as they still need at least three more points given how tight the window between Canada, who is the leader in the CONCACAF Qualifiers, and Panama, who are standing fifth and for now they’re out of Qatar.

That’s why the game of Sunday evening against Honduras will be the most important of the FIFA match window, as a victory will give the Aztec squad the points needed to at least secure the playoff berth, although a combination of results could give them the direct ticket.

At least on paper, the visit of the Mexican national team to Estadio Olímpico Metropolitano seems like an easy win for El Tri, given that Honduras hasn’t won a single game in the CONCACAF Qualifiers, although historically, Mexico has had a hard time winning in Honduras.

But not even after knowing that the game against La H will be the most important in Martino’s era, Gerardo “Tata” Martino travelled with the Aztec squad, as the Mexican Football Federation informed on their social media.

Why didn’t he make the trip?

The Argentine coach has a health condition that will prevent him from travelling in the near future, which is why he had to stay in Mexico City, where he will rejoin the team once they return to face the last game of the match window.

According to reports, Martino had a surgery on his right eye recently, which is why he can’t travel by plane for the next three months. It’s yet to be seen if “Tata” can finish the cycle or if his health is going to make him step down.

Who will be the coach?

Instead of Gerardo Martino, his place will be taken by Jorge Theiler, his assistant coach, who has already been on the dugout for a few occasions when “Tata” Martino hasn’t been able to join the Mexican national squad.

For now, the Aztec squad is already on Honduran soil ready to face the second game of the FIFA match window, although the heavy rains prevented them from training on the pitch of Estadio Olímpico Metropolitano when they arrived, and the training session had to be rescheduled.
