Since Guillermo Ochoa won the race to be the starting goalkeeper of Mexico National Team prior the 2014, he’s been the only starter for the past eight years, even if his level has dropped in the past few years, especially since he returned to Liga MX.

One of the reasons that has kept him in El Tri’s goal is the fact that he’s one of the players that give the Mexican Football Federation the most revenues, as he’s one of the most known Mexican players, but his presence is in detriment for the performances of the Aztec squad.

Gerardo “Tata” Martino knows that the presence of Ochoa is vital in El Tri, which is why he refused to call Carlos Acevedo earlier, although he didn’t have a choice for the upcoming World Cup Qualifiers match window, as Jonathan Orozco stepped down following an injury that he suffered last weekend.

Now, Acevedo has a real chance to prove Martino and his coaching staff why he should be the starting goalkeeper for El Tri in Qatar 2022, not only because his reflexes are faster and his abilities are better suited for El Tri than Ochoa’s, but also because it’s time for a generational change in the Aztec squad, and Johan Vásquez knows it.

Why does Vásquez backs up the idea of giving Acevedo the starting role?

After Johan Vásquez was called for the past FIFA match window, and he travelled all the way from Italy just to be benched by the Argentine coach for the three games El Tri played, he was aware that Martino won’t give young players the chance to prove themselves.

Vásquez has become one of the most constant defenders in Serie A, and he’s even been linked with several Italian teams that can compete in Champions League next season. But not even that has opened the door to be a regular in Martino’s starting XI.

And now that he’s aware that the generational change is needed, he’s pushing to have the best goalkeeper in El Tri as their starter, even if that means starting an intern fight, as Ochoa is one of the current leaders in the locker room.

Some players know that taking away the starting role from Guillermo Ochoa won’t be good for the immediate future of the Aztec squad, as he’s one of the main parties negotiating the prizes that the players will earn when they arrive in Qatar 2022.

According to reports, the players that back up Ochoa as the starting goalkeeper of Mexico National Team for the rest of the 2022 cycle are Héctor Moreno, Héctor Herrera, Andrés Guardado, Henry Martín and even Raúl Jiménez.
