Is he better than Hugo Sánchez? A record that seemed unbeatable for any Mexican player has been broken today, as Hugo Sánchez’s streak of 495 games played in Europe that dated since 1997 is no longer the record for a Mexican player.

Andrés Guardado became the Mexican that as played more games in Europe, with 496, surpassing the previous record held by Hugo Sánchez, who played during the 80’s and 90’s in Spain with Atlético Madrid, Real Madrid and Rayo Vallecano. He also had a short stint with Austrian FC Linz.
So far, Andrés Guardado has played 168 games with his actual club, Real Betis, which also is his longest stint with a European club, as he played 149 with RCD La Coruña, 102 with PSV, 70 with Valencia CF and only 7 games with Bayer Leverkusen.

Andrés Guardado has established himself as one of Betis most reliable players in the pitch, and even Xavi wanted to sign him while he was coaching in Qatar. Guardado has six more months of contract with Betis, but he could be living his last minutes in Europe as he’s turning 36 this year, something that could also leave him out of Mexico’s squad for FIFA World Cup.
