Héctor Herrera keeps showing why he should be a starter in Atlético Madrid

When he arrived in Atlético Madrid back in 2019 as a free agent, after not renewing his contract with FC Porto, where he was a fan favorite, Héctor Herrera was hoping to become one of the referents for Los Colchoneros and help them win La Liga.

During his second season in Madrid, Herrera achieved his goal, as Atlético became La Liga Champion after seven years of FC Barcelona/Real Madrid dominance. But for the current season, Diego “Cholo” Simeone has erased him completely form the starting squad.

So far, he’s played only 10 out of the 22 possible games in La Liga, most of them coming off from the bench. But even then, Herrera keeps showing why Simeone should consider him a starter, as his participation against Deportivo Alavés was essential for Atlético’s come back.

What will happen to Herrera after the season?

Herrera has six months left on his contract, and if things don’t miraculously change in the second part of the current season, he’ll end his stint with Atlético. Reports suggest that he can join as a free agent La Liga side Valencia FC, or even join his current teammate, Luis Suárez, in Aston Villa.
