Mexico National Team faced Uruguay on the second of three friendly games that El Tri agreed to play over the summer, with La Celeste being the toughest game of the three, as they have recovered their level since Diego Alonso assumed the coaching role.
Gerardo “Tata” Martino knew that the game was going to be different from all the games that El Tri has played in 2022, which is why he decided to change the strategy to have more solidity in defense, as Uruguay like to control the game and pressure high, pushing their rivals to commit mistakes.
But one of the decisions where Martino conceded an advantage, although it seems like an improvement for the first 30 minutes of the game, was the line of 5 defenders that he started, as the players are used to have four on the back. As if that wasn’t enough, he also decided to start a player that hasn’t found a new team since he became a free agent.
One of the decisions that surprised the most was the apparition of Alfredo Talavera in the starting XI instead of Guillermo Ochoa, not only because he’s already 41 years old, but also because Ochoa has been the starting goalkeeper since the 2014 World Cup.
But the cap for Talavera also arrived at a strange moment, given that he couldn’t agree to extend his contract with Pumas and became a free agent at the end of Clausura 2022, and although he’s been linked to a few Liga MX teams, he hasn’t found a new team.
According to the president of FC Juárez, Miguel Ángel Garza, who was asked about the building of the team after ending last on Clausura 2022, Alfredo Talavera is close to joining Bravos for next season, as they are in need of a reliable goalkeeper and he’s one of the best available.
