Guillermo Ochoa might be playing his last World Cup cycle with Mexico National Team this 2022, as his age added to the mistakes he’s usually involved in and the young goalkeepers that are starting to emerge will make it difficult for him to return with El Tri to the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

For now, the Aztec squad will have Ochoa as their starter goalkeeper, role that he’s had since 2014, where he beat José de Jesús Corona before Brazil 2014, even if Corona was in better shape, although Ochoa was El Tri’s savior on the match against Brazil, where they saved a scoreless draw.

It’s yet to be seen who are going to be the second and third goalkeepers that Gerardo “Tata” Martino is going to call for both the upcoming FIFA match window and for the 2022 FIFA World Cup, but they’ll probably be two out of Alfredo Talavera, Rodolfo Cota and Jonathan Orozco.

But Gerardo Martino will have the chance of seeing the development of some of the younger goalkeepers when the U-20 trains alongside El Tri, including one of the most promising prospects that the Aztec squad currently has: Anthony Ramos.

Who is Anthony Ramos?

The 19-year-old goalkeeper is set to be the next goalkeeper of Mexico National Team after he decided to quit playing for US Soccer academy squads and joined the academy teams of El Tri a couple years ago, when he played with the U-16 of the Bars and Stripes.

He was formed in the academy teams of LA Galaxy, but after his contract ended with the Galaxy, he decided to leave MLS and continue his career in Europe, where he joined Portuguese side Real Sport Clube, from the third-tier division.

Called to be part of the U-20 squad

So far, he’s impressed with his performances both in Portugal and with LA Galaxy II, the reserves team of the Galaxy, where he professionally debuted in USL Champioinship, United States’ second flight, which is why El Tri wants to be Ochoa’s replacement.

Although he has both the Mexican and American citizenships, he also has the possibility of playing for Honduras, given that he’s also Catracho, where they cataloged him as one of the most promising Catracho players, but Luis Pérez, coach of El Tri’s U-20, decided to call him to secure his stay with El Tri.
