Although the two last games -in Honduras on March 27, and against El Salvador in Estadio Azteca on March 30- seem to be easy wins, as both teams are already eliminated, the toughest game they’ll have is against USMNT, who will visit El Tri on March 24.

Gerardo “Tata” Martino knows that the game against the Stars and Stripes will define his future as El Tri coach, especially after losing three straight games against them on 2021, which means that FMF won’t tolerate a fourth defeat.

That’s why he’s finally planning on benching two players that have been regulars on his starting XI, given that they haven’t helped El Tri when they’re on the pitch, something that will open the doors to two players that have been asking for an opportunity for a while.

Who are the players that Martino will start?

According to reports from TUDN, the first player that won’t start on Thursday night is Jesús Gallardo, who hasn’t showed the level needed to be part of El Tri but Martino insists on calling him. His place will be taken by Gerardo Arteaga, as the 23-year-old has become a regular in KRC Genk.

The second player that Martino will bench is Héctor Moreno, as the Monterrey center back has showed weak performances since he returned to Liga MX. His place will be taken by his Rayados teammate César Montes, who will share the backfield with Néstor Araujo.

What does El Tri need to earn their ticket to Qatar 2022?

The Aztec squad are standing third in CONCACAF, with the same number of points than USMNT, although the goal difference is better for the Stars and Stripes. The goal to secure their ticket is reaching the 25-point mark, four points away from what they currently have.

But if they manage to win the game against USMNT, El Tri will become the second team classified, as the Stars and Stripes will fall three points behind and Panama will be at least four points away, which is why a victory on Thursday night is essential for Mexico National Team aspirations.
