The Aztec squad has yet to ensure direct passage to the 2022 FIFA World Cup, as there’s still combinations that could make them fall to the fourth place of CONCACAF and force them to dispute the playoffs in June.

But with their presence ensured at least for the playoffs, Gerardo “Tata” Martino has secured his stay in the bench of Mexico National Team for the remainder of the cycle, although reports suggest that he could be in conversations to extend his contract until 2026.

Now, the main problem that Martino faces from the game against El Salvador until the World Cup starts is finding a way to make the midfield be more connected both to the defenders and opens the pitch for the attackers.

With the current players, it seems a difficult task if he doesn’t give younger players more opportunities, just like he did with the central defenders, as César Montes and Johan Vásquez won the race to Héctor Moreno and Néstor Araujo, and even left Carlos Salcedo out of the roster.

Carlos Salcedo won’t play with El Tri again

Since he was vetoed from the Mexican national team after getting into a fight with Jorge Theiler, El Tri’s assistant coach, during a training of the 2021 CONCACAF Gold Cup, Carlos Salcedo hasn’t been considered for a single game.

It didn’t matter that prior the Gold Cup he was one of Martino’s favorite players, now he’s completely erased, and given the irresponsible way in which he sometimes plays, he already was suspended a game for unsportsmanlike conduct with his new team Toronto FC, it seems difficult that Martino will consider him again.

The 28-year-old central defender knows this, which is why he already decided to step down from the Mexican squad and focus solely on the 2022 MLS Season, as he knows that for as long as Martino remains as El Tri’s coach, he doesn’t have a chance of wearing the Tricolor again.

Salcedo’s numbers with El Tri

Carlos Salcedo debuted with the Mexican national team in 2015, on a friendly match against the US Soccer MNT where El Tri lost 2-0. Since then, he’s played 48 games, most of them on friendly games, in which he has scored just one goal.
