After the scoreless draw that Mexico National Team obtained against USMNT last Thursday, El Tri needed to beat Honduras to avoid losing the third place on the CONCACAF Qualifiers standings, especially because Costa Rica has left the crisis behind and is on their heels.

Luckily for the Aztec squad, they were able to win in Estadio Olímpico Metropolitano with a goal of Edson Álvarez, who keeps establishing as the best Mexican player nowadays. The 1-0 was enough for El Tri and their aspirations of avoiding the playoffs.

The thing that keeps worrying is the lack of goals the Mexican national team has, as they couldn’t find the net of the goal more than once against the worst team of CONCACAF in a game that had everything to be a breakthrough for what is expected from El Tri from now on.

At least for once the blame can’t be directly put in Gerardo “Tata” Martino, as he wasn’t present in the stadium as it was requested for medical recommendation that he didn’t travel with the team, although he earned just the same even if he watched the game on TV.

How much did Martino earn for the game against Honduras?

According to the report of Goal, the Argentine coach has a salary of $2 million per year which is fully guaranteed, no matter if he misses a game like the one against Honduras or if he is sent off, which means his absence didn’t affect his annual earnings.

But it’s yet to be seen if the health condition he has keeps him sidelined for the next game the Mexican national team plays, as reports suggest that he can’t travel by plane for three months, and El Tri’s next match is set to be played in Florida in April.

El Tri will start their annual tour through the United States with a game against Guatemala in Orlando, Florida, where the Camping World Stadium -formerly known as Tangerine Bowl or Florida Citrus Bowl- will serve as home of the Aztec squad.

What will happen if Martino is not able to travel to Qatar?

The Mexican Football Federation are still considering the options they have in case the health condition of Gerardo Martino doesn’t improve, although their official statement suggest is not as serious as it was believed when they first informed that he was not allowed to travel.

But if the Argentine coach isn’t fully healed, one of the options is to have Jorge Theiler, his assistant coach, as the coach that takes over the team for the remainder of the cycle. The other option is looking for a replacement, something they’re doing given the irregular results El Tri has had in the past year.
