Mexico National Team hasn’t been able to find a striker that can complement Raúl Jiménez, as neither Rogelio Funes Mori nor Henry Martín have been able to make a difference when they’re on the pitch, which has been manifested on the lack of goals El Tri has.

FC Barcelona was after him, but Gerardo Martino didn’t want him in Mexico National Team

On their last five games in the CONCACAF Qualifiers, the Aztec squad has scored only four goals and has received five, showing that not only they need with urgency a new striker, but also that the defense is weak and has costed them the leadership of the confederation.

For the defensive problems, Martino is trying to call players that are on better shape, like Alan Mozo, who will substitute Luis “Chaka” Rodríguez, who has been a liability for El Tri in recent games, or even Johan Vásquez, who is a starter with Genoa CDC.

But for the lack of goals, it seems that he doesn’t have other options, although he keeps ignoring strikers like Luca Martínez Dupuy, who was invited to be part of the preliminary list of Argentina National Team that Lionel Scaloni posted for the upcoming CONMEBOL Qualifiers, although he declined because he wants to play for El Tri.

Who is Luca Martínez Dupuy?

The 20-year-old striker was born in Mexico when his father was playing in Liga MX, which is why he holds both Mexican and Argentine citizenships but has said in multiple occasions that he wants to play for El Tri given that is the country where he was born and where he spent his first years. He’s been part of the U-20 and U-21 squads.

He’s done his career in Argentina, where he debuted with Rosario Central after being part of their academy teams. So far, Martínez Dupuy has played a total of 44 games with the Canallas, where he’s been able to score 7 goals and two assistances.

What’s in store for Mexico National Team?

Mexico National Team will face USMNT, Honduras and El Salvador on the upcoming CONCACAF match window, on three games that will define who are the CONCACAF teams that will play in the 2022 FIFA World Cup.

For now, the only team that has guaranteed their assistance to Qatar 2022 is Canada MNT, as they are still unbeaten and have earned 25 points. USMNT and El Tri are behind them, as both have 21 points, although the Bars and Stripes have a better goal difference, but that will change on March 24, when the Aztec squad receives USMNT.
