Carlos Vela decided to officially announce his retirement from Mexico National Team a few weeks ago, although he hasn’t played with El Tri since the 2018 FIFA World Cup. For now, the right-winger is focused on Los Angeles FC, where he already debuted for the 2022 MLS Season with a hat-trick.

Carlos Vela’s response to the critics he received from retiring of Mexico National Team

One of the main reasons of his absence in the Aztec squad has to do with how vocal Vela has been about Guillermo Ochoa’s starting role, as he doesn’t think he’s the best option for El Tri’s goal, something that already broke the dressing room when Vela still was part of the roster, as they don’t get along and other players took sides.

Vela’s relationship with Mexican Football Federation has never been the best, as the first time he was vetoed from El Tri was in 2010, when he was pointed to be one of the players involved in a scandal, where it was leaked that El Tri players had a party in the hotel where they were staying.

Rumors point towards Guillermo Ochoa as the responsible of leaking the information to the directives of FMF. Since then, the relationship between Ochoa and Vela has been tense, to say the least, but it finally broke during the 2018 FIFA World Cup.

Will Vela return to Mexico National Team?

His current form with LAFC shows that he’s one of the best Mexican active players, and few people understand why Gerardo “Tata” Martino hasn’t given him the chance of returning to El Tri, although now it seems almost impossible to se Vela wear El Tri colors in an official match again.

Given the situation inside El Tri, and that there wasn’t going to be any changes, Vela decided to focus solely on his career in MLS, as he still has one year left on his contract and his current performances might earn him a contract extension.

Which goalkeepers are going to be part of El Tri’s roster?

For now, “Tata” Martino will have Guillermo Ochoa as his starting goalkeeper, but the two other spots that FIFA allows to goalkeepers are still in the air, as the competition between Alfredo Talavera, Rodolfo Cota and Jonathan Orozco will be solved on the last days prior Qatar.
