Mexico National Team will face the last CONCACAF Qualifiers match window looking to earn their ticket to the 2022 FIFA World Cup, as they haven’t secured it yet, given that they lost against USMNT and Canada MNT last year, which also made them lose the leading spot of CONCACAF.

In the upcoming FIFA match window, El Tri will receive USMNT in what will be the most important of the three games, as the Bars and Stripes have won the last three encounters. Then, the Aztec squad will visit Honduras and will end their path to Qatar 2022 in Estadio Azteca, when they receive El Salvador.

If they manage to beat USMNT, it’s almost certain that they will have their direct ticket to the World Cup, as they will surpass the Bars and Stripes to become the second place in CONCACAF, just behind Canada, who are the only national team from the confederation that already have guaranteed their assistance.

But things for Gerardo “Tata” Martino and El Tri might not be as easy as they seem, as according to reports, a new player is considering stepping down from Mexico National Team, given that he knows he’s closing the door for other talented players.

Who is the player that might retire?

In an interview for TUDN, Alfredo Talavera confirmed that this is his last cycle as a player of Mexico National Team, given that even if he’s a regular in Gerardo Martino’s roster, he knows he doesn’t have the chance of beating Guillermo Ochoa for the starting role.

He also knows that his career is coming to an end, which is why his place in El Tri could be used by someone who has their career ahead of them, as Carlos Acevedo, who can be the Aztec’s goalkeeper for more than a decade, given that he’s just 25.

Alfredo Talavera’s numbers Twith El Tri

Since his debut wearing El Tri colors in 2011, on a friendly match against Paraguay where he played the 90 minutes and Mexico won by a 3-1 score, Talavera has played a total of 41 games, including his participation in the 2016 Olympics.

Talavera has played only six games in the CONCACAF Qualifiers and couldn’t debut in a World Cup. And even if most of his performances have been in friendly matches, he managed to keep 23 clean sheets and has received 20 goals.
