Next Saturday we will have a new edition of Mexico vs. Chile and a question is in the air: will the 7-0 thrashing be repeated again?
You would think that after more than 5 years the Mexican fans would forget the brutal defeat. But nothing could be further from the truth.
Mexico's coach, Gerardo Martino, knows the importance of winning this match, even though it is a friendly.
"El Tata" needs to change the current direction of the Mexican National Soccer Team, as its performance has made it difficult for Mexico to qualify for the FIFA 2022 World Cup in Qatar.
After suffering a loss to Canada in the final CONCACAF playoff game of the year, the coach said:
“I think we lacked depth in the first half even though we controlled it very well and I think we played better in the second half, despite being two goals down”.
Martino must at all costs prevent Chile from thrashing Mexico 7-0 again in order to lift his team's spirits.
And to do so, he will rely on young talents who will make their debut in the Mexican National Soccer Team.
Some of these young talents are Marcelo Flores, who plays for Arsenal U18.
There is also Julian Araujo of the Los Angeles Galaxy and Luis Olivas of Chivas, who like Flores, will have their first experience with El Tri.
Araujo's case is special because he recently made his change of federation after previously representing the United States.
And in this Mexico vs. Chile match, he will have the opportunity to show himself to compete for a place in the qualifiers with Chaka Rodríguez and Jorge Sánchez.
For this friendly match, Gerardo Martino called up 4 elements of Club Santos, who are ready for this great commitment.
Carlos Acevedo, the goalkeeper of the team from La Laguna, will be in the match as he is going through a great moment.
The goalkeeper has aroused the interest of one of the great European teams: Bayer Leverkusen, which is looking to sign him.
This is a great opportunity for the goalkeeper, who has been playing for Santos since 2013.
The other Santos players called up for the Mexico vs. Chile match are Omar Campos, Eduardo Aguirre and Alan Cervantes.
So, with the strength of the youth of his called-up players, Martino will try to avenge the 7-0 with which Chile eliminated Mexico from the Copa America Centenario 2016.
For that match, coach Juan Carlos Osorio, whose process was surrounded by several controversies, called up a starting 11 that he thought could neutralize Chile, but it was not the case.
Although today none of these players will play in the Mexico vs. Chile 2021 duel, it is important to remember which names were in the 2016 Copa América Centenario.
The mexican players who were on the field that tragic day were:
Guillermo Ochoa
Héctor Moreno
Néstor Araujo
Diego Reyes
Miguel Layún
Paúl Aguilar
Héctor Herrera
Andrés Guardado
Jesús Dueñas
Carlos Peña
Javier Hernández
Jesús Manuel Corona
Hirving Lozano
Raúl Jiménez
Will this new Mexican National Team be able to avenge the painful 7-0?
