Since Fernando “Tano” Ortíz assumed the coaching role in Club América in the ninth round of Clausura 2022, Henry Martín has been a starter in three games, against CF Monterrey, in the first game that Ortíz coached; against CD Toluca and Club Necaxa.

His place was taken by Federico Viñas, who in the last five games of the regular season of Clausura 2022 became the favorite forward for Ortíz, although the Uruguayan striker was able to score only one goal over that span of time.

For the game against Club Puebla in the first leg of the quarterfinals, Ortíz didn’t change the lineup, as the striker that started the game was Federico Viñas, although he had to leave the match in the first half, as he got injured after 20 minutes on a collision in the box.

Ortíz didn’t have any other choice than replace him for Henry Martín, who played the rest of the game and even had a few plays to open the score for Las Águilas but given the lack of confidence that he has showed throughout Clausura 2022, he couldn’t find the net.

Why has Ortíz preferred to start Viñas over Martín?

Although the Mexico international was able to score more goals through Clausura 2022 than Federico Viñas, the decision of starting the 23-year-old Uruguayan forward is a tactical decision, as Fernando Ortíz has said in the past.

Henry Martín is a player that doesn’t move much, his biggest strength is to receive the ball near the box to find the goal as soon as possible, while Viñas is a movable player, as he runs through the pitch and thanks to his speed, he has an easier time losing the mark.

Las Águilas will have to wait until Thursday morning to know the severity of the injury that Viñas suffered and if he will be available for the second leg of the quarterfinals, as the current version of Martín doesn’t contribute to Club América’s aspirations.

Will Martín leave Club América?

Reports in recent weeks suggest that they are planning on parting ways with Martín given the poor production he’s had in the last year, although the decision will be taken by the new coach. But is a fact, is that they will have to look for a new striker over the summer transfer window.
