Since Fernando “Tano” Ortíz was named as the interim coach of Club América once that Las Águilas parted ways with Santiago Solari, the Azulcremas have managed to leave the bottom of the table and are battling for a Repechaje spot.

Club América already has their first addition for the 2022-23 Liga MX Season

So far, they’ve played four games with “Tano” Ortíz on the dugout, half of what they played with Santiago Solari, and have already earned one more point than what the were able to achieve with “El Indiecito”.

Las Águilas are currently standing 14, just one point below Necaxa and Tijuana, who are occupying the last two spots for Repechaje, and with the victory over Necaxa last weekend, they tied Chivas in points, a clear sign that the worst has passed for them.

But even if Ortíz will stay in Las Águilas dugout for the remainder of the season, Club América still needs to find a new coach with a long-term project, and Guillermo Ochoa already knows the coach he wants to have in Club América for the 2022-23 season.

Who is the coach that Ochoa wants?

According to reports from sports journalist Miguel Arizpe, since “Tano” Ortíz took over the job, it was Guillermo Ochoa one of the players that backed him up, something that has benefited the Argentine coach, as Ochoa has helped to build better chemistry between him and the roster.

That’s why Ochoa, who has less than one year on his contract and hasn’t started negotiating a contract extension, wants Ortíz to remain as Las Águilas coach for a longer period, as he has helped them to start playing like a team again.

It’s worth mentioning that Fernando Ortíz shared locker room with Guillermo Ochoa when he was still a player, during the 2009 season, which is why they have a good friendship that has influenced his decision to make Ochoa the captain of the team.

Ochoa on his last year of contract

Guillermo Ochoa returned to Las Águilas in 2019 with a 3-year contract after Club América paid $1.2 million to Standard Lieja for his permanent move. Ochoa is still considering if it’s the best option for his future to stay in América or leaving for MLS, as at least three teams are interested in him.
