Santiago Solari was sacked from Club América last week after he was only able to win six points in eight rounds of Clausura 2022, leaving Las Águilas at the bottom of the table, something that hasn’t happened since Clausura 2017.

Although during his first year as Las Águilas coach Solari had good numbers, he even made them Liga MX leaders for Apertura 2021, when they only lost two games and ended the season with 35 points, the results he had during the first half of Clausura 2022 were unsustainable.

It’s true that it wasn’t all his fault, as Santiago Baños wasn’t able to sign any of the players Solari requested, other than Jorge Meré and the right-winger he insisted was needed in Las Águilas to have a full roster. And even if in the end he got his right-winger, although it wasn’t the one he wanted.

But even if he couldn’t help Las Águilas as he expected, he’s ready to turn the page and continue his career, something that could happen in the next few days, as he’s been linked to Colombian side Atlético Nacional, a team that he doesn’t see with bad eyes arriving to, and he even considers bringing an América player with him.

Who is the player that Solari wants?

He just arrived at Club América, as he was the last addition they had for the current season and even if he wasn’t the player Solari wanted at first, he learned very quickly of the skills and abilities of Juan Ferney Otero, who became an immediate starter for Solari.

Otero shined with Santos Laguna during his stint in La Comarca, team where he played for a year after he couldn’t consolidate in Ligue 1 with French side Amiens SC and given the connection he had with Diego Valdés in Santos, América decided to hire him.

Such connection hasn’t been replicated in Las Águilas, as neither Valdés nor Otero have been able to fully adapt to their new team, which is why Club América could consider selling him, especially as Solari was the one that insisted on acquiring a right-winger.

What’s Otero’s current market value?

Juan Otero is under contract with Las Águilas until 2025, but they would consider selling him for at least $3 million to recover some of their investment, even if his current market value is set at $3.85 million and they acquired him for $4.4 million.
