One of the best things that happened to Club América was parting ways with Santiago Solari, as the Argentine coach left them at the bottom of the table with just six points after eight rounds of Clausura 2022, for what is now their worst start in Liga MX since the short tournaments were established.

Fernando Ortíz already knows who is going to be his first addition for Club América

With Solari on the dugout, Las Águilas won only one game in the first half of the season, added to the three draws they managed to save, they had only six points and no aspirations to even make it into Repechaje.

But thanks to Fernando “Tano” Ortíz, they are now just one victory away from accessing directly to Liguilla, as they currently stand in the fifth position, just behind Club Puebla and Atlas, who will have to win their respective games if they want to avoid Repechaje.

After starting his stint with a defeat against CF Monterrey, Ortíz hasn’t lost a single game ever since, including a scoreless draw in the Clásico Nacional, and six victories in a row, which places them as the team with the best streak just before the playoffs.

Ortíz will remain as Las Águilas coach

The outstanding performances that Club América has had since “Tano” Ortíz was named interim coach has made Emilio Azcárraga aware of the necessity of signing him to a long-term contract, as he was going to return to the U-20 when the season is over.

Currently Ortíz has six months left on his contract, but reports suggest that Santiago Baños is negotiating a contract extension for one year, tying him up for the 2022-23 season with Las Águilas, but only if he manages to reach the semifinals.

The reason behind reaching the semifinals is to prove that he can surpass what Santiago Solari did during his stint in Club América, where he only was able to reach the quarterfinals. With the current performances that Las Águilas are having, it won’t be that difficult to achieve it.

How much will he earn?

According to reports, “El Tano” Ortíz will keep his current salary if he prolongs his stay in Club América, which is of $800,000 per season, a sum that is more than three times lower from what Solari earned, as he had a salary of $2.5 million per year.
