Fernando “Tano” Ortíz took over Club América after Santiago Solari left them at the bottom of the table after eight rounds in what has now become their worst start in Liga MX at least since the short tournaments were established in 1996.

Santiago Baños hasn’t decided if Fernando Ortíz will stay as Club América coach

Since then, Las Águilas have completely changed, not only their performances but also the attitude showed in and out the pitch, as they look a team that is connected and compenetrated, which explains their latest results.

Although “Tano” Ortíz lost his first game as Club América coach -2-1 against Monterrey-, he rapidly understood how things worked and hasn’t lost a game since then. So far, he has a seven-game streak without losing, with the last six games being all victories.

With 19 out of 24 points earned since he become Las Águilas coach, “Tano” Ortíz has Club América with chances of making it directly into Liguilla if they manage to beat Cruz Azul on the last game of the regular season and either Club Puebla or Atlas don’t win their respective match.

He’s already planning next season

Ortíz is aware that he is one of the top candidates to coach Club América next season, as Santiago Baños has established one condition for him to remain in Las Águilas dugout: to make it at least into semifinals, surpassing what Solari did during his stint.

“El Tano” knows that with the way they are currently playing, there’s a high possibility that they’ll be one of the teams on the semifinals, which is why he’s looking to strengthen the squad for Apertura 2022, and he already knows who the first addition will be.

According to reports, he’s convincing Guillermo Ochoa to renew with Las Águilas, as the Mexico international has eight months left in his current contract -it expires in December-, and he hasn’t started negotiating an extension.

Will Ochoa remain in América?

Since his return to Club América in 2019, Ochoa has one thing in mind: winning a new Liga MX title with his childhood team. So far, Las Águilas haven’t been able to win Liga MX, the last time it happened was the season before Ochoa arrived, which is why he’s considering staying another year, as he knows that they have the highest opportunity of achieving it with Ortíz in the dugout.
