It took a few games for him to adapt to Club América, but since Fernando “Tano” Ortíz took over Las Águilas, Diego Valdés has become on of their most important players, not only for what he scores but also for the creation and the possession of the ball.

But since Las Águilas started their 6-game unbeaten streak, Valdés has been the heart of the team, as he’s scored four goals and has been involved in several more, especially the ones that Alejandro Zendejas has scored, as Valdés pulls the mark to leave open spaces.

The outstanding performances that Valdés is having with Las Águilas in Clausura 2022 are similar to the ones that he was used to give when playing for Santos Laguna, where he was the referent of the team, something that “Tano” Ortíz has helped him to recover.

As if making it into Liguilla after being at the bottom of the table for the first half of the season wasn’t enough award for the 28-year-old offensive midfielder, recent news has given him the opportunity of playing in the 2022 FIFA World Cup.

How will he be able to play in the World Cup?

Although Chile National Team was eliminated from the World Cup during the last CONMEBOL Qualifiers, as they finished seventh, five points away from Peru National Team, who will be in the playoffs, they still have a chance of making it into Qatar 2022.

After news broke about Ecuador lining up a player who was not born in Ecuador, but in Colombia, for eight of the 18 games of the CONMEBOL Qualifiers. It’s yet to be seen what FIFA and CONMEBOL will do, but Ecuador could end up losing their place in Qatar.

Even if Chile is three spots down in the CONMEBOL standings, they will be the most benefited team, as two of the games in which Byron Castillo played were against them. If FIFA ends up giving the points that Ecuador won on those games, it will place Chile as the fourth place in the confederation.

How will the standings move?

Castillo played two games against Chile and Paraguay and one against Uruguay, Venezuela, Argentina and Peru. The first three places wouldn’t move -Brazil, Argentina and Uruguay-, but the fourth spot would be taken by Chile, as they lost their two games against Ecuador.

Peru would remain in fifth place and Colombia in sixth, but Paraguay, Bolivia and Venezuela will move up one spot, leaving Ecuador at the bottom of the table with only 10 points after losing the 14 of the games where Byron Castillo was lined up.
