When Marcelo Michel Leaño arrived in Chivas to replace Victor Manuel Vucetich, he did in not only as the youngest coach in Liga MX, but also with the intention of giving El Rebaño Sagrado an identity that had been lost after Matías Almeyda left.
Silently, Amaury Vergara already has found a buyer for Chivas
His idea, when he took over Chivas amidst Apertura 2021, was to replicate the success he had in Liga de Expansión with Atlético Zacatepec, where he coached two seasons and helped the team reach a semifinal for the first time in decades, where the team also had a strong connection with their followers.
But in the 15 matches he’s been in Chivas dugout, Michel Leaño hasn’t been able to do any of those things. First, they lost on Repechaje last season, after they barely managed to access as number 12 of Liga MX, and now, they’ve only won two games in Clausura 2022.
Amaury Vergara said that he was going to give Marcelo Michel Leaño some time to adjust in Chivas before deciding what to do, as he has full confidence in what the young Mexican coach can achieve in El Rebaño Sagrado.
Although the results haven’t been in his favor, Chivas currently stand 9 in Liga MX table, a better position than what they achieved last season, but still far from the places they should be, which is why Chivas followers are demanding a change.
Reports suggest that Amaury Vergara has been in conversations with Ramón Morales, Chivas former player and one of the most recognizable players on El Rebaño’s history. He could arrive in Chivas once again, as he was assistant coach in 2015 and then coached the U-20 squad.
Although he debuted with Monterrey and played with Rayados for five years, he’s mostly remembered for his stint with Chivas, where he played for 10 years, until 2010, when he became a free agent. He played a year more in Guadalajara, although this time with Estudiantes Tecos, where he finally retired.
Michel Leaño has an effectivity percentage of %37.78 as Chivas coach, with 4 won games –two of them against Mazatlán FC–, 5 tied and 6 lost, numbers that far from what Amaury Vergara expected him to have when he first hired him.
His numbers raise more questions if compared with the ones that José Manuel Vucetich had on his stint in Chivas, as Vergara decided to part ways with him given the poor results he achieved. Vucetich coached 45 games, winning 17, tying 17 and losing 11, giving an effectivity percentage of %50.37.
