Matías Almeyda was the last coach that helped Chivas win a Liga MX title, back in 2017. Since then, El Rebaño has lost the protagonist role they used to have in Mexican soccer, and with Marcelo Michel Leaño on their dugout, it seems improbable that they’ll win another title soon.

Amaury Vergara has tried to establish a project that returns Chivas to the front pages of Liga MX and CONCACAF, without any success, as Almeyda also gave El Rebaño their last international title when they won CONCACAF Champions League in 2018.

In total, Almeyda won five titles with Chivas in the three years he coached them, but not even those statistics have made Amaury Vergara consider him to arrive in Chivas for a second stint once Clausura 2022 is over.

Almeyda is ready to leave his current team, MLS side San Jose Earthquakes, given the poor relationship he has with the ownership as they haven’t backed up his project, and his next destination will likely be Mexico, but it doesn't seem like it will be with Chivas.

What team can hire him?

After news broke of the possible dismissal of Gerardo “Tata” Martino once the current FIFA match window is over if Liga MX owners vote for it, the coach that will replace him in El Tri is Miguel Herrera, who already coached the Mexican team from 2013 to 2015.

“El Piojo” is currently coaching Tigres, team that will have to look for a new coach if Herrera embarks on his second stint with the Aztec squad, and Matías Almeyda could be that coach, as he was on the mix to arrive in Los Felinos bench when Ricardo Ferretti left a year ago.

Cruz Azul and America are also on the mix

Cruz Azul could be looking for a new coach once Clausura 2022 is over, as the Peru national team is negotiating with Juan Reynoso to replace Ricardo Gareca, but that will only happen if La Blanquirroja is eliminated from Qatar 2022.

On the other hand, Club América are still looking for a coach to replace Santiago Solari, something that will happen once the season is over, as they named Fernando "Tano" Ortiz as the interim coach for the remaining six games of Clausura 2022.
