Club América was able to win their second game of the season on Sunday evening with a 3-0 victory over Club Toluca. Las Águilas only needed 17 minutes to secure the win, as Toluca didn’t know how to stop the game established by the Azulcremas.

Club America vs Toluca: Roger Martínez, Alejandro Zendejas and Diego Valdés give Las Aguilas the win

Roger Martínez opened the score after 7 minutes in what was the most doubtful play of the game, as the VAR had to intervene to see if there was an offside, but the referee determined that Martínez was behind the defenders.

Diego Valdés scored the second goal of Las Águilas from a free kick that left Gustavo Guadalupe Gutiérrez Muñoz, Toluca goalkeeper, out of the play. The final goal was scored by Alejandro Zendejas just a couple of minutes later with a header that put the final numbers on the scoreboard.

Even if América had at least three more plays in which they could have extended their scoring streak, the thing that impressed the most was something that Santiago Solari was never able to do for the eight games he was in Las Águilas’ dugout.

What was the thing that Solari couldn’t do?

Las Águilas were able to impose their playing style since the game started, something that Solari was never able to do, thanks to the starting XI that Fernando “Tano” Ortíz placed on the pitch of Estadio Azteca on Sunday evening.

For starters, this was the first game in 11 rounds that Club América had four offensive players at the start of the game, as “Tano” Ortíz understood that what Las Águilas were missing was opportunities for their strikers.

That’s why the Uruguayan coach decided to place Roger Martínez as left-winger, Alejandro Zendejas as right-winger, Henry Martín as forward and Diego Valdés as offensive midfielder, on a scheme that was more than beneficial given that Toluca defense was never able to figure out how to stop the wingers.

The secret for their success: dominating the midfield

But if that wasn’t enough, “Tano” Ortíz finally found the way to dominate the midfield, something that Las Águilas hadn’t been able to do during the past games, as Álvaro Fidalgo and Richard Sánchez were able to combine perfectly, which help to the creation of most of the offensive plays.
