In the past month, things have started to return to the right track for Club América after being on the bottom of Liga MX table for multiple weeks, given that Santiago Solari left them with only six points after eight rounds in what was the worst start for Las Águilas in over 70 years.

But since Solari left and Fernando “Tano” Ortíz was named as the interim coach for the remainder of the season, Las Águilas have slowly left the bottom of the standings and are now battling to earn at least one of the spots for Repechaje.

For now, they’re standing 14 with 13 points after 12 rounds, tied with Chivas and Atlético San Luis, and just one point below Necaxa and Xolos de Tijuana, who currently holds the last two tickets to the Mexican playoffs.

Something that “Tano” Ortíz has done in the four games he’s coached is slowly erasing some of the players that Santiago Baños acquired and that haven’t proved to be of need for Las Águilas, as they’ve performed better without them on the pitch.

Baños will leave América at the end of the season

Santiago Baños has proved that he doesn’t have what it takes to be the president of a team like Club América, as in the five years he’s been in Las Águilas, they have won just one Liga MX title, back in 2018 with Miguel Herrera as the coach.

In that same amount of time, Monterrey has won four titles, including a CONCACAF Champions League, which they won by beating Club América in the final. All of these results are thanks to the participation and scheming of Duilio Davino, who is their sporting director.

Given the closeness that exists between Las Águilas and Davino, who played for a decade in Club América, from 1997 to 2007, Emilio Azcárraga wants to have him as the successor of Baños, who is living his last season as an Azulcrema.

Can Davino arrive in Las Águilas?

According to reports, Davino could leave Monterrey after the current season ends given that he’s been criticized from within for some of the latest decisions he’s taken, including the signing of Javier Aguirre as their coach.
