CD Toluca arrived at the last game of the regular season with only one objective in mind: to avoid paying the “Relegation Fee”, something that they could have achieved if it wasn’t for Club León, who were trying to make it into Repechaje.

Both teams needed a victory to achieve their respective objective, that’s why they prioritized the attack above anything else on a game that ended with eight goals, a record for the season, although the 4-4 draw didn’t help neither León nor Toluca.

In less than 40 minutes, the game was already tied 3-3 thanks to the goals of Ian González, Leo Fernández, and Osvaldo Rodríguez (OG) for Los Diablos Rojos and Víctor Dávila, Ángel Mena, and Jean Meneses for La Fiera.

On the second half, Alexis Canelo gave Toluca the advantage at 56’ and the Choriceros were close to avoiding finishing the year in the bottom three places of Liga MX hence not paying the Relegation Fee, if it wasn’t for a last-minute goal scored by Stiven Barreiro.

Toluca negotiates with Chivas to receive aid to pay the fee

The 4-4 draw put an end to one of the worst seasons for Toluca in recent history, as they also became the team that received most goals during Clausura 2022, with 36, 10 more than FC Juárez. Now, they will have to pay a $1.6 million fee.

But Los Diablos Rojos have found a way of financing the fee thanks to Chivas, as El Rebaño Sagrado is in need of young players to strengthen their squad for Apertura 2022 and have set their eye on of Toluca’s most promising players.

In the past, Chivas and Toluca have been good trading partners, as Chivas have acquired several players from the Diablos Rojos, like Isaac Brizuela and Alexis Vega, which is why they’re considering helping Toluca to pay part of the Relegation Fee while also improving their own roster.

Who is the player that Chivas wants?

El Rebaño is looking to acquire Isaías Violante, an 18-year-old striker that played seven games with Toluca's first team and scored one goal, although most of his appearances where with the U-20. IF Chivas were to sign him, they will have to pay less than $1 million, and affordable investment that will also help Toluca to pay around half of the fee.
