Chivas closed the regular season of Clausura 2022 with a 1-0 victory over Club Necaxa that helped them climb up to the sixth spot in the Liga MX table, giving them the home advantage in Repechaje, where they will face Pumas for a place in Liguilla.

El Rebaño Sagrado managed to finish the season with four straight victories thanks to the arrival of Ricardo Cadena as interim coach after he replaced Marcelo Michel Leaño, who was sacked after 13 games given the poor results that he achieved.

Ricardo Cadena managed to finish the season unbeaten thanks to the victories over Cruz Azul by 1-0; 2-1 against Xolos de Tijuana, 3-1 against Pumas and 1-0 against Club Necaxa, managing to have more victories than Michel Leaño.

But the 4-game winning streak is more impressive if is taken into consideration the fact that none of the seven goals that Chivas scored were scored by a forward, as José Juan Macías has been injured since Cadena arrived, and Ángel Zaldívar couldn’t find the net.

Chivas are looking for a new striker

Whether Ricardo Cadena stays in Chivas’s dugout or not for the 2022-23 Liga MX Season, one thing that he’s been clear about is finding a new striker, as even the good streak can only be maintained certain time without a forward that consistently scores.

El Rebaño Sagrado has the option to acquire a young striker that has scored over 100 goals in the academy categories, although it’s up to Amaury Vergara to decide if he arrives at Chivas or another team signs him first.

According to Sebastián “Loco” Abreu, his son Diego Abreu is in conversations to arrive at Chivas for next season, as he wants to continue his career in the Mexican soccer, something that will open the doors for him to be considered by Gerardo “Tata” Martino.

Chivas is not the only club interested

For now, the 18-year-old striker plays for Uruguay side Defensor Sporting Club U-19 but is recovering from a torn ACL that suffered last December when he was playing with Uruguay U-20. He has been part of El Tri academy teams in the past, which is why Jaime Lozano knows him and wants to sign him for Club Necaxa.
