The last game of the round 7 of Clausura 2022 was one of the most exciting games of the weekend and left a surprising result, given that Cruz Azul were the clear favorites against a Santos Laguna that hadn’t won a single game in the current season.

Cruz Azul is at risk of losing two players after Clausura 2022 ends

The Laguneros were the perfect victim for La Máquina, at least on paper, as they were standing last in Clausura 2022 and arrived in Estadio Azteca after falling by a 3-1 aggregate against CF Montréal in the round of 16 of CONCACAF Champions League.

But just as the game was starting, Harold Preciado opened the score for the visitors after just five minutes, scoring an authentic ‘golazo’ from outside the penalty box that left “Chuy” Corona out of the play.

Twelve minutes later, Uriel Antuna made Carlos Acevedo the hero of the match, after failing a penalty kick that Acevedo stopped, although he left the ball in the middle of the six-yard box. Antuna had another chance of scoring right away, but Acevedo flew to stop the ball once again.

The play didn’t end there, as a series of rebounds in the box led to two more saves by Acevedo in the span of 20 seconds, as neither Santos managed to kick the ball out of bounds nor Cruz Azul scoring the goal that would have meant the partial draw.

Cruz Azul managed to score in the second half, when Ángel Romero crossed a pass to the middle of the box, where José Ignacio Rivero beat Acevedo with a header to the furthest post. After that, the game seemed to be ending in a draw, although both teams had multiple options of winning the game.

Until Diego Medina on added time managed to beat “Chuy” Corona for the second time in the game, after his shot was slightly diverted by Pablo Aguilar, giving Santos their first victory in Clausura 2022 and against a team that is a contender for the title.

Antuna wasn’t the one supposed to kick the penalty

Uriel Antuna became the villain of the first half after missing two shots in les than 5 seconds, but the truth is that he wasn’t the one that was supposed to kick the penalty. He grabbed the ball without consulting his teammates, as he knew that Carlos “Charly” Rodríguez is the man in charge of the penalty kicks.

Cruz Azul defenders, responsible for both Santos Laguna goals

It’s clear that Juan Reynoso will have to look for at least one central defender once Clausura 2022 is over, as neither Julio César “Cata” Domínguez nor Pablo Aguilar answered when the were most needed by their teammates.

“Cata” Domínguez was the only responsible for Harold Preciado in Santos first goal, as he couldn’t clear the ball and instead served it to Preciado’s location, who didn’t have any cover and was able to shoot freely.

But Pablo Aguilar didn’t leave his teammate alone, as he deflected the ball after Diego Medina shoot against Corona’s goal, leaving Cruz Azul goalkeeper out of the play, and taking away the point that Cruz Azul felt secured.
