The elimination of Club América in the semifinals of Clausura 2022 against CF Pachuca put an end to the outstanding streak that they had since Fernando “Tano” Ortíz took over the team, as before the second leg, they had 11 straight games without a defeat.

Will Fernando Ortíz stay at Club América after the elimination in semifinals?

The 3-0 victory for Los Tuzos also meant the second defeat of Ortíz in Liga MX, given that after he lost on his debut as Las Águilas coach in week 9, when they visited Monterrey and lost 2-1, Club América remain unbeaten, a streak that helped them finish the season in the top four.

Reports from TUDN suggest that Emilio Azcárraga and Santiago Baños have agreed to keep “El Tano” Ortíz as coach of Las Águilas for at least another season, something that will give him the opportunity of building the squad as he pleases.

Although for now, there’s just a few positions that he’s aware that needs to be strengthen, there’s a possibility that he’ll have to start looking for a new goalkeeper, given that Guillermo Ochoa hasn’t renewed his contract.

Will Ochoa leave Las Águilas?

The 36-year-old goalkeeper is under contract until the end of the year but given that there haven’t been any conversations between him and Club América so far, he could start negotiations with any team over the summer to join them as a free agent once Apertura 2022 is over.

During the broadcasting of Club América vs Pachuca, Iván Zamorano, who works as an analyst for TUDN, revealed that he had a conversation with Ochoa, where the Mexican international told him that he still wants to play in Europe again.

Ochoa returned to Las Águilas in 2019 when he left Belgian side Standard Lieja, and even if he did it with the idea in mind of winning a new Liga MX title with Club América, he also knows that if he wants to return to Europe, this is the last chance he has to do it.

Can he return to Europe?

Ochoa knows that the summer is the perfect opportunity for him to negotiate his return to European leagues, as he could sign as a free agent and join his new team during the winter transfer window or involve Club América and leave Liga MX over the summer, but leaving an income for them for his departure.
