The draws for the 2021/22 UEFA Champions League season was made today and it threw up some interesting match-ups. Whilst 2021 Champions Chelsea will battle Juventus in Group H, the most interesting group seems to be Group A where Manchester City, Paris Saint-Germain, R.B. Leipzig, and Club Brugge have been drawn together. There are quite a number of sub-plots that run through these group pairings.

One of the sub-plots is the reunion of Lionel Messi and Pep Guardiola. With his summer move to PSG, Messi will immediately face off against his former coach. There were rumours that Messi could have moved to the Guardiola-led side, Manchester City but the deal never materialised.

Another of the sub-plots for the Group is the fact that both clubs are backed by Oil-rich owners and have deep reserves of wealth to spend in the transfer market. PSG have bought some quality players this summer including Achraf Hakimi, Gini Wijnaldum, Gigi Donnarumma, Sergio Ramos, and Lionel Messi. One their part, Manchester City purchased Jack Grealish for £100m from Aston Villa. And the Citizens are now being linked with a move for Cristiano Ronaldo.

If Ronaldo moves to the Etihad Stadium, then there will be an immediate face-off between him and Lionel Messi in the UEFA Champions League Group stages. This means that between September and December, both players would likely play against one another. The dates are not certain yet as UEFA is yet to release the match-day fixtures. We'll wait to see if Ronaldo is able to make the move before the August 31st close of the transfer window.
