The Belgian Soccer League unanimously approved the project to merge with that of the Netherlands to give birth to the BeNeLeague, which would unify the two tournaments, although the approval of the other party is still pending. A measure that will undoubtedly mark a before and after in the history of European football, and which may become the kickoff for more countries to follow suit.
The general assembly of the Belgian Pro League supported the idea without fissures, with the vote of the 25 clubs that comprise it, with the aim of taking a leap in quality that allows the development of professional football and ensuring economic stability. It should be noted that between the two countries, the Netherlands has a slightly more competitive football, with teams such as Ajax, PSV, or Feyenoord.

A unified league, explain the promoters of the project that would allow Anderlecht and Bruges to be measured in the same tournament with Ajax and Feyenoord, among others, would be much more attractive and would raise revenues, including broadcasting rights. According to them, the merger would allow the entry of between 300 and 400 million additional euros, which would not only benefit the clubs involved but the entire football movement in Belgium and the Netherlands, according to the Italian agency ANSA.
For the idea to materialize, we will have to wait for the vote of the clubs that make up the Dutch League or Eredivisie. However, it is worth remembering that this is not the first time that such an idea has been proposed. Without coming to the idea of a merger, some years ago there was speculation about the possibility that the two biggest teams in Uruguay, Peñarol and Nacional, would play the Argentine tournament, but it quickly became ineffective.
