When he was the coach of the Netherlands national team, Ronald Koeman wanted Sergiño Dest to play for his team. However, the soccer player, who has a Dutch mother and an American father, chose to play with the U.S. National Team. Now, the 57-year-old coach has the young footballer available in Barcelona.

Sergiño Dest is very likely to play El Clásico against Real Madrid this Saturday due to the injury of Jordi Alba, who plays in the same position as he does. In that case, the 19-year-old would become the first American to play the most exciting match in Spain. What is his story?

Dest grew up in Almere, a city located 30 kilometers from Amsterdam. At the age of 12, he joined the youth divisions of Ajax. It was not until 2019 that he made his debut in the First Division, thanks to Mazraoui's injury and the transfer of Matthijs de Ligt to Juventus in July 2019.

He played 38 games and scored two goals in the Netherlander team. Then, he signed a contract with FC Barcelona on October 1, 2020. Since his arrival at the Spanish club, he has played three games: the 1-1 draw against Sevilla, the 1-0 defeat against Getafe and the 5-1 victory against Ferencvaros in the Champions League.
