What can be found positive in being Real Madrid or Barcelona and being almost 10 points behind Atlético de Madrid at the top of the standings? Well, yes, there can be something worth to celebrate, even if the title escapes. Nobody likes to finish in second place when it comes to any kind of competition. But it could still bring rewards.

Barcelona has started the season in a fatal style following the unforgettable 2-8 defeat against Bayern Munich that forced coach Quique Setién’s departure. Then, his replacement, Ronald Koeman, decided to leave Luis Suárez out of the squad. The Uruguayan striker eventually moved to Atlético de Madrid, who are now leading the standings, in big part, thanks to his goals.

Now, how could Real Madrid or Barcelona celebrate finishing in second position? Here’s why: the Copa del Rey finalists will join the top two placed teams in La Liga 2020-21 season. All of them will fly to Saudi Arabia to take part in the Spanish Super Cup. Currently, Atlético de Madrid leads the table on 50 points with two matches less than Real Madrid (43) and one less than Barcelona (40).

Only by entering the Spanish Super Cup and earning their spot in Saudi Arabia, clubs will receive a bonus that rises to €6 million, or $7.2 million. Of course, if they qualify in a higher position, the reward will be higher too. Will Atlético de Madrid win the league? They seem to be on the very right track. Meanwhile, Barcelona and Real Madrid might have to just wait for the bonus.
